Dog Pack
Hello
On behalf of the entire team at Malvern Veterinary Hospital we would like to extend a very warm welcome to you and thank you for choosing our hospital for your pets care.
Malvern Vet has been re-awarded ASAVA (Australian Small Animal Veterinary Association) “Hospital of Excellence” Accreditation repeatedly since 1981. Hospital of Excellence status is continuously re-assessed and is presented in recognition of very high standards of diagnostic, surgical, laboratory, and nursing facilities in the practice. There are currently only 15 practices in Victoria that have been awarded this honour so you can rest easy knowing your dog is in good hands.
We’d like to gift you a dog lead which can be picked up next time you’re in, just mention it to one of the team and we can get that for you. We also invite you to follow us on our Facebook and Instagram accounts as a fun way to stay in the loop, with helpful information and to see the wonderful pets we have the pleasure of looking after.

Pet Insurance:
-
Did you know we offer GapOnly® at Malvern Vet?
GapOnly® is a payment service that works with selected pet insurance brands, so you can access your pet insurance benefit right away for eligible expenses. That means, rather than paying us the full invoice upfront and waiting to be reimbursed, we submit your claim on the spot, on your behalf, while you’re at our clinic. Your claim is generally assessed within 10 minutes, and if approved, you just pay us the gap – the amount not covered by your pet insurance policy.
Although we do not specifically recommend a particular Pet Insurance Company it is a strong recommendation to have pet insurance. It is peace of mind knowing that if something does happen to your beloved pet that you have the ability to do all you can without the financial stress. We recommend doing your research with different companies to find a cover that you are happy with the excess, premiums and type of cover. Recommentations for the care of your dog:
Feeding:
Malvern Vet Hospital stocks a comprehensive range of quality pet products and supplies for dogs and cats of differing breeds. Our products and supplies include the premium quality Science Diet range as well as Hills Prescription foods. We recommend feeding your dog a premium diet such as Science Diet because although your dog could survive on non premium diets they won’t live their healthiest longest life. Premium diets are nutritionally dense using only high-quality ingredients, which often means you feed them less resulting in less number 2’s to pick up (winning!).

Vaccinations:
Vaccinations are extremely important for animals of any age as they can be exposed to many threatening diseases. Malvern Vet Hospital’s standard vaccine for a dog is the triennial C5 which covers them for Distemper, Hepatitis & Parvovirus for 3 years, and Bordetella bronchoseptica and Parainfluenza 2 (canine cough/kennel cough) for one year.
Heartworm Prevention:
Heartworm is a potentially fatal parasitic worm that can enter your dog’s bloodstream via a mosquito bite. The worm then migrates through the body until it finally finds its home… the heart and lungs! Once there it can grow to a large enough size that can affect the functionality of those organs which can cause heart failure, lung disease, organ damage and potentially death. To ensure consistent cover to prevent your dog from getting this we recommend doing an annual heartworm injection called SR12.
To ensure consistent cover to prevent your dog from getting this we recommend an injection called SR12 that is done annually.
Alternatively, you can treat monthly with a wormer, such as Milbemax, that also treats heartworm. It is important to not miss this monthly tablet as it will leave your dog susceptible to heartworm. For this reason we find a lot of our clients choose the injections instead.

Intestinal Parasite Control:
If your pet has a large number of worms it may find it difficult to maintain body condition and it can lose weight. In some cases it can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and even anaemia (a low red blood cell level). Occasionally, heavy intestinal worm burdens can cause death.
Malvern Vet Hospital recommends using a wormer such as Milbemax. Milbemax delivers broad-spectrum protection for cats and dogs against common intestinal worms, including roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and tapeworm, in a small three-monthly tablet.
Flea Prevention:
It’s no secret fleas can be a major discomfort for your pet and cause severe irritation. We recommend using Bravecto three-monthly chew or a six-monthly spot-on. Bravecto also protects against paralysis ticks which can be especially important if you travel into NSW.
Dental Health:
- Hills prescription T/D is a Complete & balanced nutritional diet which is clinically proven to reduce plaque, stain, & tartar build-up. It has a unique kibble size and shape made up of a special fibre matrix that helps to mechanically clean the teeth as the kibble is eaten.
- OraVet Dental chew have a scrubbing action that reduces plaque and tartar build-up resulting in cleaner teeth. The delmopinol in the OraVet chew then forms a barrier to help protect against the bacteria that leads to plaque and calculus build-up for a cleaner mouth and fresher breath.
- Greenies Dental Chew a day helps clean your dog’s teeth by using his natural chewing action to wipe away plaque and tartar build-up from the surface of the teeth. The chewy and flexible texture allows teeth to sink in with every bite all the way to the gums for more effective cleaning.
- Manually Brushing if you have time is also a great way to maintain a healthy mouth. Starting young and making it a reward-based activity can help in introducing this. A finger toothbrush or a soft-bristled child’s toothbrush with doggy toothpaste as often as possible can help to reduce the bacteria in the mouth reducing plaque build up and dental disease.
Joint Health:
Arthritis, osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease, is a common problem. It is the result of wear and tear of cartilage in the joints. We have a range of suggestions and medications available that are designed to preserve cartilage, decrease inflammation and provide pain relief:
- Beransa Injection: A monthly injection that inhibits NGF (nerve growth factor) thus targeting the root cause of osteoarthritic pain directly.
For more information: zoetis.co.nz/products-solutions/dogs/beransa
- Joint Supplements: Your vet can recommend dog specific supplements that provide additional support to the cartilage. Depending on other treatments used they may recommend “4 cyte”.

- Weight management: Maintaining a lean body weight is important as a drug-free way to manage arthritis. If you’d like advice on your dog’s body condition and weight loss please discuss this with our team.
- Zydax is a unique injectable drug that stimulates cartilage re-growth; a repair damaged joints and improves the quality of joint fluid. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. It is given as a weekly injection for four weeks and this course is repeated every 3, 6 or 12 months depending on your dog’s needs.

- Hills Prescription J/D: This diet contains a very high level of nutritional supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids (fish oils). These omega-3s are anti-inflammatory at high levels and is helpful for dogs with arthritis. This food down regulates gene expression to reduce cartilage destruction.

Separation Anxiety:
As a pet owner, you want the best for your fur baby. You want them to be healthy- physically and emotionally. Like humans, dogs and cats can experience anxiety for many reasons such as when left at home alone, in a new environment ore when meeting another animal. It is important to recognise that separation anxiety can develop at any age- not just in puppies and kittens. Not uncommonly it can manifest in senior pets experiencing cognitive decline and dementia.
- ADAPTIL is a synthetic copy of the comforting pheromone released by a mother dog naturally to calm and reassure her new puppies. This pheromone can have a calming effect on puppies in stressful situations when released through ADAPTIL. Puppies experience a lot of firsts and some big changes, especially in the first few months of life and this can be extremely beneficial. It comes in a home plug-in diffuser, a wearable collar that last 1 month or a spray for when you go out.
